pailhead
We are developing a unique mixed-used project in a small town in the Midwest. We have decided to hold a competition to permit unknown architects to have a chance to become the lead architect for our building. The parameters are unusual. The building's exterior must utilize the design vernacular in use prior to 1900 and must be compatible with the designs used on commercial streets in the Midwest of the mid- to late-1800's. Modernist or post-modernist concepts are not acceptable. The first floor of the structure will house retail shops. The second and third floors will be residential apartments. The parcel on which the building will be constructed is 190 feet long and 120 feet wide. A shopping arcade, with skylit roof, will occupy the south face. The east face is entirely commercial, since it faces the busiest commercial street in the town. The west face is to have at least one porte-cochère for entrance to the rear of the arcade and the apartments. A clock tower should rise from the northeast corner of the structure. The use of bay windows is encouraged, as is the free use of ornament. For purposes of the design competition, construction cost is not particularly material, although the actual cost of the project will be between $10 million and $15 million. Entrants should consider using the Italianate Revival, Gothic Revival, Eastlake or Second Empire styles. To enter the competition: submit, in pdf form, a perspective drawing from the northeast, and a rendering of the east elevation of your proposed design prior to November 2, 2012. In your cover email, please use the word "onion" so we can sort through the spam. All submissions become property of the developers; by entering the competition, the entrant transfers, irrevocably, the copyright in the material submitted to the developers. The winner of the competition will receive a cash prize of $100, plus the opportunity, at the discretion of the developers, to become the lead designer of the project. Inasmuch as we believe this project will be of lasting architectural significance, the value of winning the competition itself should not be underestimated. We believe this competition to be an excellent opportunity for previously unrecognized architects and designers to come to the fore. Email with the word "onion" with any questions. Rapidograf
The winner of the competition will receive a cash prize of $100  Hehe.
